Meridia Recruitment Solutions has partnered with BF&M, a leading insurance provider with operations in Bermuda, Halifax and across the Caribbean, to recruit for their Life & Health Underwriting Manager in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Position Overview: As the Life & Health Underwriting Manager you will play a vital role in the underwriting department, overseeing a team of underwriters and contributing to the modernization of the underwriting capabilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in medical, life, and disability insurance underwriting, exceptional analytical skills, and a commitment to excellence. This role reports directly to the Associate Head, Life & Health Administration & Underwriting and has two direct reports.

Primary Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

1. Team Leadership:

• Supervise and mentor a team of two underwriters, providing guidance and support to ensure effective underwriting practices.
• Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment, promoting professional development within the team.
• Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to direct reports.

2. Underwriting Expertise:

• Apply deep knowledge of medical, life, and disability insurance underwriting principles to assess and evaluate risks.
• Review and approve complex underwriting cases, providing insights and recommendations for decision-making.
• Keep abreast of industry trends and regulatory changes to ensure compliance and best practices.

3. Project Management:

• Lead and actively participate in projects aimed at modernizing our underwriting processes and capabilities.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement new technologies, tools, and methodologies to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

4. Analytical Skills:

• Utilize strong analytical skills to assess data, statistics, and trends, supporting data-driven underwriting decisions.
• Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines and pricing strategies to optimize risk management.

5. Compliance and Risk Management:

• Ensure underwriting practices adhere to regulatory requirements and company policies.
• Monitor and mitigate risks associated with underwriting decisions, taking appropriate actions when necessary.

6. Reporting and Documentation:

• Prepare and present underwriting reports to senior management, highlighting key performance metrics and trends.
• Maintain accurate and organized underwriting records and documentation.

Skills & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in a related field or relevant professional designations in underwriting.
• Proven experience in medical, life, and disability insurance underwriting.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
• Effective leadership and team management skills.
• Knowledge of underwriting software and tools.
• Familiarity with underwriting regulations and best practices.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
