Meridia Recruitment Solutions has partnered with BF&M, a leading insurance provider with operations in Bermuda, Halifax and across the Caribbean, to recruit for their Life & Health Underwriting Manager in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Position Overview: As the Life & Health Underwriting Manager you will play a vital role in the underwriting department, overseeing a team of underwriters and contributing to the modernization of the underwriting capabilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in medical, life, and disability insurance underwriting, exceptional analytical skills, and a commitment to excellence. This role reports directly to the Associate Head, Life & Health Administration & Underwriting and has two direct reports.
Primary Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
1. Team Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor a team of two underwriters, providing guidance and support to ensure effective underwriting practices.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment, promoting professional development within the team.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to direct reports.
2. Underwriting Expertise:
- Apply deep knowledge of medical, life, and disability insurance underwriting principles to assess and evaluate risks.
- Review and approve complex underwriting cases, providing insights and recommendations for decision-making.
- Keep abreast of industry trends and regulatory changes to ensure compliance and best practices.
3. Project Management:
- Lead and actively participate in projects aimed at modernizing our underwriting processes and capabilities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement new technologies, tools, and methodologies to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
4. Analytical Skills:
- Utilize strong analytical skills to assess data, statistics, and trends, supporting data-driven underwriting decisions.
- Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines and pricing strategies to optimize risk management.
5. Compliance and Risk Management:
- Ensure underwriting practices adhere to regulatory requirements and company policies.
- Monitor and mitigate risks associated with underwriting decisions, taking appropriate actions when necessary.
6. Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare and present underwriting reports to senior management, highlighting key performance metrics and trends.
- Maintain accurate and organized underwriting records and documentation.
Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or relevant professional designations in underwriting.
- Proven experience in medical, life, and disability insurance underwriting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
- Effective leadership and team management skills.
- Knowledge of underwriting software and tools.
- Familiarity with underwriting regulations and best practices.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
