The Senior Underwriter manages and develops a well-diversified underwriting portfolio to achieve profitability and retention goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Product leadership for the Management Liability & Financial Institutions portfolio with a focus on Public Company D&O.
  • Ensure adequate visibility into the industry, with a mandate to grow this book in a profitable manner.
  • Achieving gross written premium, retention, and new business goals specific to Customer Segment or Product Line plans outlined. Drives new business growth in core products & customer segments.
  • Production of new business and maintenance of renewal book of business. Includes risk analysis, pricing, negotiating, setting terms, and referrals to management as necessary.
  • Effective use and execution of Sales Advantage objectives including pipeline management, agency intelligence, producer management and sales call execution
  • Establishes effective practices to continuously communicate appetite/industry strategies; drives effective market messaging
  • Utilizes effective relationship management to ensure improved and/or expanded relationship with target producers to ensure achievement of targeted profitability and  renewal retention goals
  • Demonstrates adherence to underwriting discipline to minimize exposure and appropriately price risks
  • Develop producer specific plans to achieve new business goal. Review producer results to plan quarterly and adjust plan. Drive producer accountability.
  • Achieve continuous improvement in prospect building
  • Develop a pipeline process to target specific new and renewal accounts and measure outcomes
  • Participate in underwriting audits
  • Ensure Underwriting Assistant/Associate Underwriter meet service standards for document handling and workflow is appropriate and timely for business unit.
  • Coaching and mentoring of junior underwriting staff.

    May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong marketing skills to enable profitable growth of a book of business.
  • Must have familiarity with the brokers in the community and expertise and knowledge of distribution and the competitive market environment.
  • Customer service focused with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, interpretation, organizational and time management skills. Must be detail oriented.
  • Ability to conceptualize details and develop action plans for problem solving and decision making.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment, making sound underwriting decisions with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated coaching skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.

Education & Experience

  • University degree (preferably in Commerce or related field), combined with a CIP designation (or progress towards completion),
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of commercial Management Liability or Professional Liability underwriting experience;
  • Progress towards completion of CIP. CFA or RPLU designation is desired.
