Our Internal Audit Department is continuously working towards enhancing audit services in support of new strategic initiatives. These initiatives have led to rapid company growth and the creation of new roles within the Internal Audit Department at our Executive Office. Under general guidance and minimal supervision of the Manager, Operational Audits - Underwriting, the Senior Data Mining Specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining data analysis protocols as part of enterprise-wide operational, financial, information technology, consulting, and regulatory compliance audits, in support of the organization's strategic goals and initiatives.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develops customized scripts that effectively merge and review large groups of data and extract relevant information that will assist the Internal Audit Department in detecting control weaknesses and revealing trends, patterns, and relationships that might otherwise have remained undetected.

• Identifies data analysis opportunities, designs and executes queries, extracts and manipulates structured and unstructured data for subsequent review and analysis.

• Assist with supervising the work of the Data Mining Specialist.

• Performs complex audit procedures, including identifying and defining issues, developing criteria, reviewing and analyzing evidence, and documenting processes and procedures.

• Works with Internal Audit project teams to perform data analysis procedures as applicable in support of ongoing audit department projects.

• Manipulates and analyzes data in a variety of formats (e.g. SQL, VBA, Power Query, and Excel).

• Identifies and documents complex issues and develops recommendations using independent judgement.

• Assumes a leadership role in enhancing the department’s data analytic capabilities by training other members of the department in performing basic data analysis techniques.

• Develops and maintains strong working relationships with key internal clients and stakeholders.

• Assists with the annual risk assessment process and development of the annual audit plan.

• Assists with conducting special reviews of various areas on an ad-hoc basis.

• Pursues professional development opportunities and professional association memberships.

• Represents Internal Audit on project teams and at management meetings.

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager, Operational Audits - Underwriting.

 

Qualifications

 

• Minimum 5 years information technology or data analytic experience, or a combination thereof.

• Bachelor of Computer Science degree or other related post-secondary degree.

• Professional audit designation (CIA and/or CFE), or commitment to obtaining same.

• Insurance related experience, or commitment to obtaining the CIP designation.

• Proficiency with advanced functions in Microsoft Excel is required.

• Proficiency with SQL query development is required.

• Experience with Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, SQL*Plus, and SQL Developer is considered an asset.

• Proficiency with data processing using VBA or R is considered an asset.

• Proficiency with ACL or Idea software is considered an asset.

• Excellent analytical/problem solving skills and attention to detail.

• Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to meet project deadlines.

• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team.

• Demonstrated ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information.
