Loss Control Manager

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Loss Control Manager is responsible for the overall management and leadership of all Loss Control functions. Your focus will be to manage and build a loss control team whose main function is to assess risks and provide consultative services to our underwriters and broker partners while driving results through leadership, development and engagement.

 

The Manager will set operational expectations for the team of loss control professionals providing a consistently high level of expertise and service standards.  In support of this, the Loss Control Manager will develop procedures for handling current and emerging risk exposures and will communicate/provide training to our underwriters and broker partners.

 

As an experienced Loss Control professional you will be expected to design, develop, implement and monitor programs to improve the underwriting, risk selection and profitability of our business. 

 

In this role, the Manager will also be responsible for completing inspections through work similar to direct reports based on business needs.  Use of your own vehicle for driving to risk inspections as well as for travelling to meetings or training is required.

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has an understanding of risk control techniques and analysis, underwriting, and claims adjusting functions, as well as strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.

 

Education: Bachelor's degree in safety, engineering, fire science, insurance or business management preferred.

 

License/Certification/Designation: A minimum of one of the following designations, such as: Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Canadian Risk Management (CRM), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or other recognized designation preferred. Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence with a clear Motor Vehicle Driver (MVR) report with no major violations and/or convictions is also required.

 

Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years of relevant risk control experience in the property & casualty industry, plus 2 years supervisory or management experience preferred with demonstrated leadership of experienced technical / professional personnel.

 

Knowledge: Expert knowledge of safety and risk management practices and principles including various building, fire and safety codes. General knowledge of farm, commercial and residential construction practices, environmental issues, electrical systems, electrical safety and PPE plus a strong understanding of the fundamental role of Loss Control as well as the Mutual Insurance Industry.

 

Skills/Competencies: Advanced verbal and written communication skills to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts. Advanced technical skills (e.g. thermal analysis and inspection techniques). Interpersonal skills to interact with leadership, internal business partners and peers. Leadership and influencing skills including the ability to resolve disagreements quickly and effectively. Ability to prioritize work/time. Ability to operate a personal computer and learn/use applicable systems.
