The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Leader, Accident Benefits, you are responsible for subrogation activities at The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group (CMIG) across all lines of businesses, Auto and Property and several policy types, Residential, Farm and Commercial, Accident Benefits and Bodily Injury. You are accountable for identifying and pursuing subrogation opportunities to improve our bottom line.
In your role you will demonstrate subject matter expertise and best practices within the claims team. At times, you may be responsible for assisting with claims operations during peak periods and when catastrophic events occur.

- Team player who works collaboratively with claims adjusters, and the leadership team to acquire the necessary information to pursue or not pursue subrogation

- Develops relationships with peers and other members of the organization as required to help achieve strategic corporate objectives
How you will create an impact:
- Investigate, reserve and negotiate settlements with third parties on subrogation matters
- Familiar with small claims court proceedings and is able to represent CMIG, this includes:
- Working with defence counsel, drafting pleadings, defences, motions, affidavits
- Preparing evidence, obtaining statements from first and third parties
- Strong legal and technical knowledge of subrogation, including working with defence counsel in civil actions, providing discovery, pre-trial and settlement materials for court
- Familiarity with caselaw of subrogation matters
- Strong understanding of auto, personal, commercial and farm insurance wordings and products
- Ability to determine the basis of fault and provide well supported documented files as may be required for legal proceedings
- Proven record of effective and persistent ability to seek damages from liable third parties and insurers
- Proactively manages reserves to ensure financial reporting accuracy is maintained
- Assists with the following types of recovery:
- Subrogation recoveries pertaining to property damage and auto claims
- Loss transfer
- Priority
- Overpayments, duplicate payments
- Deductible and self-insured retention recovery
- Defend and provide consultative services for subrogation against CMIG
What you will bring:
- 5 years experience in P&C insurance with direct experience in claims handling and subrogation
- Completion of Post-Secondary Education
- Completion or working towards Certified Insurance Professional
- Active pursuer of the necessary education to respond to a changing marketplace
- Superior problem solving and analytical skills, balanced with strong decision-making abilities
- Thorough attention to detail to ensure accuracy of claims documents
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Having a paralegal license with the Law Society of Ontario is an asset
- High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts
- Strong computer literacy and proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs
- Familiarity with Guidewire ClaimCenter is an asset
