Responsible for prompt efficient review and disposition of insurance claims through effective research, evaluation, investigation. Assist the legal expense insurance underwriter, Technology Insurance Company (TIC) with Canadian product development and policy wording production. This position has an instrumental role in the transition of operations from STERLON to North Coast Solutions of Canada to establish a fully functioning Canadian legal expense insurance company as part of the AmTrust Group.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigates the claim or coverage by making timely and appropriate contact with involved or interested parties including but not limited to the insured or insurer, or broker/coverholder or panel lawyer
  • Determines, reviews and analyzes coverage
  • Ensures claims are adjudicated according to policies, procedures and standards of the company
  • Responsible for setting of timely and accurate reserves based on facts, company standard and experience.
  • Leverages strong critical thinking and decision-making skills to gather, assess, analyze, question, verify, interpret and understand key or root issues
  • Select appropriate panel lawyer with the necessary skill set for the claim
  • Review panel lawyer legal opinions, review pleadings (if applicable to claim)
  • Monitor and continually assess merits of the claim
  • Approve settlement negotiations
  • Advise Insurer of policy interpretation issues that may need to be addressed by a rewrite of the policy
  • Liaise with the brokers and coverholders regarding claims and products
  • Liaise with underwriter regarding all matters
  • Oversight of junior loss adjusting staff,
  • Providing insights and input when referring claims to third party adjusters in other jurisdictions
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers and gains their respect and trust.
  • Ensure high customer service standards are met
  • Maintain a panel of approved law firms and ensure they remain fully up to date with products
  • Produce Panel Lawyer Agreements and Applications
  • Performs other functionally related duties

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years claims handling experience
  • Ontario Provincial General Adjuster’s licence req
  • Extra provincial licence for Alberta
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office suites
  • Strong knowledge of insurance theory and practices


Preferred:

  • Extra provincial licence in other her jurisdictions
  • Law degree or other legal qualifications
